2007 Show Report
What had started off as something of a disappointment , rapidly developed into more of an appreciable success as the 2007 North East national Show unfolded. Staged by the budgerigar societies of South Shields and Sunderland, the show officials had been looking forward to an increase in entries over the 2006 event – all the signs appeared to suggest such a happy outcome : but it was not to be,
In the event, a total entry of 522 birds was received, representing a decrease of something over 100.
The show was held in the Brinkburn Community Centre, a smaller hall than that
used, at the same site, by the show over the previous two years, but was still
sufficiently large to accommodate this more modest entry, particularly as it had
the benefit of an adjacent kitchen/restaurant which proved an ideal meeting
place for fanciers who wished
to
feed body, mind and spirit, sharing fellowship and eating in harmony with other
fanciers.
Meals were provided for all stewards, as well as the judges, and the restaurant remained available serving wholesome food for the duration of the show.
Happily, the show also had the consolation of there being a good benched entry, which included a very good standard of exhibit.
It was particularly pleasing to note so many ladies among the fanciers providing such support. Our gratitude to them for showing us how we should express our enthusiasm for the fancy! Certainly, those members who worked throughout seemed to feel the benefits of a job well done !!
Additionally, the show could not possibly have run so smoothly had it not for the help received from friends from other societies, who rallied around and formed a hard working team of stewards.
The judges were A Brown, M
Ballard, J S Cooke and R Steele, who completed their task timeously and
efficiently,
so that the show was able to open to the public promptly
They selected a fine Cinnamon Grey Cock staged by the newly formed partnership of French & Ratcliffe, as Best in Show.
Best Young Bird in Show was won by Don Rowell’s Normal Grey Cock and the same fancier, who had a field day particularly in the Champion Young Bird Section, also annexed the award of Best Opposite Sex Young Bird with a much-admired Greygreen Hen
The popular partnership of Ray and Anne Graham took the award of Best Opposite Sex Any Age with their Cinnamon Greygreen Hen.
The main Junior specials were shared by Charlotte Forrest and Kate French

SHOW REPORT 2006
The North East National Show, promoted by the budgerigar societies of South Shields and Sunderland, was held on Sunday 30th July 2006. A total entry of 675 birds was attracted – some 150 up on the 2005 show show. This was a very encouraging figure, reflecting the new vitality experienced at two previous shows in the area. The fact that there was a 25% increase in the number of exhibitors (49) was an additionally cheering aspect. There is obviously still much room and scope for attracting both old fanciers back to the exhibiting ranks and also for signing up even more new members – the recent influx of new members to the fancy augurs well for the future. We must continue to sell this marvellous hobby to a public which perhaps does not yet know that we exist.
A further bonus was that all fanciers who had entered birds this year were able to bench the vast majority of them – in all there were only some 85 birds which were not sent, despite what is usually said to be a great obstacle to maintaining show condition – a very sustained period of hot and sultry weather. Perhaps 'Melopsittacus undulatus' is finally becoming accustomed to Global Warming!!
This was the second show in the area this year, and the fact that more exhibitors supported this show hopefully indicates that by the end of the season we will as a fancy continue to gain momentum. It was in fact pleasing to note that we have recorded an increase in the number of beginner entries, which is a hopeful sign for the future
The awards were placed by N Beevers, J S Brett, J Mason and Mrs N Phillips who completed their tasks with aplomb and quiet efficiency. Theirs was probably a heavier task than even the show committee who planned the event, had envisaged, because of the number of birds benched. Perhaps an additional judge next year will be advisable! They selected Lee Pennick’s magnificent Adult Greygreen cock as Best in Show; a first ever premier award for this Novice exhibitor. Best Breeder in Show was Paul Redford’s Spangle Hen which was much admired..
Happily, we again had two Junior exhibitors, Paul Fairbridge and Kate French: the latter triumphed on this occasion, taking both the Any Age and the Young Bird awards.
The show committee remains continually in the debt of the ladies for fund-raising efforts and especially those who provided refreshments throughout the show, thus ensuring the continued well being of a hard-working team of stewards and officials - we fanciers know just how important a good standard of feeding and watering is!
Once again, it was generally felt that the North East National is a happy show, and we hope and believe that the 2005 event lived up to that tradition. It was particularly good to see how many visiting exhibitors stayed on to give valued service as stewards. They helped to make the show that bit more special for the organising committee.
My personal apologies as Show Secretary for the delay in getting the awards sheets, Prize Money and other paperwork out as timeously as I would have liked. This was due to a combination of a rogue computer and my lack of observation, but I trust that it did not mar anyone’s enjoyment of the event. If anyone failed to get a catalogue and results sheets, I will be happy to send/give them a copy.
Finally, our thanks to those ‘Star performers’, the exhibitors who made this such a memorable experience for many!

The North East National Show, promoted by the budgerigar societies of South Shields and Sunderland, was held on Sunday 31st July 2005. A total entry of 528 birds was attracted - about the same as at the 2004 show. This was a little disappointing as we had hoped that things had started to "pick up" more in this area. The fact that there was a slight increase in the number of exhibitors (39) was something of a more cheering aspect, but we obviously have much to do to attract old faces back to the fancy and to sell this marvellous hobby to a public which perhaps does not yet know that we exist.
A further disappointment came when two of our valued exhibitors were forced to withdraw their teams because of, respectively, domestic circumstances and the team’s fitness being badly affected by a sudden moult (our friend the weather again !)
This was the second show in the area this year, and the fact that more exhibitors supported this show hopefully indicates that by the end of the season we will as a fancy continue to gain momentum. It was in fact pleasing to note that we have recorded an increase in the number of beginner entries, which is a hopeful sign for the future.
The awards were placed by G D Findlay, J Rogerson, R Rogerson and G Moore who completed their tasks with aplomb and quiet efficiency. They selected Ray and Ann Graham’s magnificent Adult Green cock as Best in Show and there was surely no-one at the show who would disagree with this decision. This represented something of an end to an era because, while Ray and Ann had won six or seven consecutive Best in Shows Since last year, these had all been with the same bird - a Greygreen Cock. Best Breeder in Show was Norma Phillips’ Normal Cinnamon Skyblue Hen which was much admired..
Happily, the total lack of Junior exhibitors at last year’s event was not repeated here. We actually had two Junior exhibitors, both from the Sunderland & District area, so hopefully now that they have set the ball rolling more youngsters will be encouraed to dip their toes into the waters of the exhibition side of the fancy
The show committee remains continually in the debt of the ladies for fund-raising efforts and especially those who provided refreshments throughout the show, thus ensuring the continued well being of a hard-working team of stewards and officials - we fanciers know just how important a good standard of feeding and watering is!

*************************************************************
As we had very much hoped for, the North East National 2008 brought the sprouting of what may have been the first “seeds of recovery” in the response received from fanciers both local and ‘across the border, this year.
Last year’s total entry of 521 was boosted by something above 9%, the increase in exhibitors also being of a similar figure, so that the total of 45 exhibitors gave us something in the region of 575 exhibits.
Happily, of this total, only around 80 birds failed to arrive – two exhibitors being unable to send their teams, so the overall benched entry was around, or just under, the 500 mark – to be confirmed by judges’ returns.
This was once again a very happy show, boosted by a number of factors. Firstly, there was the band of helpers, locally and ‘travelling’ exhibitors, who decided to ‘make a day of it’ at the show, and thus ensured that the judges were kept well supplied and their needs attended to. Then there was the fact that the judging team were able to complete their work in good time for the opening of the show – our thanks to them for a job well done. Among the exhibitors, we welcomed old friends, who have not been able to show with us in recent years, giving us that essential boost to our already rising spirits. Then of course, the stalwarts who help with the show year in and year out and give us the necessary basis for planning next year’s event. And the ladies and one gent (including the wife and parents of the Patronage Secretary)-- once again they kept us extremely well ‘fed and watered’ throughout the show, and thus kept us all ‘in good fettle’.
The North East National has always made one boast of itself—that its main policy is to provide a happy show and meeting place for all fanciers, near and far of all , and this appeared to be felt by the folk who attended this event, judging by the many smiling faces which were to be observed. It is, of course, the visitors who provide this atmosphere, and we thank them for their great contribution to the show
Finally, it was particularly pleasing to note that members who have joined Sunderland BS very recently turned up in strength to play an essential part in the running of the show. Happily, each of them capped there excellent work by returning very good result with their individual show teams: all this augurs well for succeeding years!
As to the show results, this was distinctly a Charlie Bowman benefit – it was certainly his year! He ‘swept the boards’, taking Best Any Age and Best in Show with his excellent Dark Green Cock, then also annexing the Best Young Bird specials with his much admired young Cinnamon hen. Not content with these, he was also well into the specials in both the Any Age and Young Bird Sections with other members of his show team, taking a total of four Best of Colour awards. Our congratulations go to him on his success!
Among other results, it was good to see that both our Junior exhibitors this year had excellent results when pitted against their elders! Charlotte Forrest took the Albino certificate with her robustly attractive Adult Hen, while Lewis Murray grabbed the Greygreen certificate from his father, Andy, who was second in the line-up.
It was also noted that none of our enthusiastic friends from Scotland went away from the show empty handed and were well among the Colour and section awards. We hope that we will see them again next year
